Shiffman’s new book Learning Processing: A Beginner’s Guide to Programming Images, Animation, and Interaction is now available for purchase. We used a pre-release copy last year in ICM and it’s a great intro to the Processing language.

On Monday (July 28th) a group of us from ITP will be conducting an event: 5-in-5. My fellow Fivers and I will be producing and documenting one creative project each day for 5 straight days. Check in on the website, follow us on the MAKE Blog, and cheer us on.

We are still in brainstorming mode, but here’s a taste of some of the insanity the Fivers plan to create:

ITP is going Pass/Fail

Starting in the upcoming Fall ‘09 semester, ITP is going to be graded on a Pass/Fail system. As you can probably guess, this has caused quite a stir in the community, especially on our e-mail l list (see: The List).

For the record, my class will still be graded using the current A-F grading system, but all incoming 1st years will be on the Pass/Fail system.

How you know it’s the weekend before the Spring Show at ITP:
You wake up in the morning and find you’ve been sleeping on a handful of wires and LEDs all night from working on micro-controllers in bed.

I just hope I found them all. :-/

Department website facelift

ITP’s website got a facelift. From a site that used to be entirely Flash (not searchable) with awkward navigation to a text and image only site (should be searchable…) with more up-front news and a clearer set of our areas of focus, it is a much needed overhaul. Everyone has their own opinions on the site (no doubt we’ve been hearing those on the student list) but it’s still being flushed out, so I won’t go deep into any of the flaws. Except for a few blips (currently the large background images are either far too low resolution or need to be far lower resolution to be an obvious aesthetic decision and the front page still needs some attention to blend with the rest of the site) I think it’s going to do a really good job of its purpose.

What we do around here is hard to pin down (and we wouldn’t have it any other way), but I think they’re definitely trying a bit too hard with the front page description by adding in ambiguous terms like “augment” and “bring delight”. Why not a simple description like “ITP is a two-year graduate program in New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts dedicated to exploring interaction with technology, art and design.”…?
